Blasphemously making himself a mountain throne in heaven, Satan first had to talk his subordinates into following his scheme for a rebellion. Speaking to an assembly of the angels under him, Satan blasted his followers for obeying God, calling their loyal service a nasty "prostration" and saying that they were really meant to rule, not to be servile underlings. Abdiel, however, heckled Satan, saying that the idea of a created being rebelling against his Maker was crazy - like a puppet turning against the puppet-maker who held its strings. Abdiel argued that Satan had to be weaker than God since God created him. Satan shot back that, no, he was not a created being - which was another lie from the Father of Lies. Helping him here was the angel Gadreel, who taught humans how to make weapons, as well as other fallen angels teaching similar forbidden subjects like the vanity of cosmetics and how to write. (See Semjaza) Azazel started out as the name of a vague Old Testament desert creature.

Each year, on the Day of Atonement, the Hebrew high priest sent this creature a scapegoat. But before dispatching the goat into the desert, the high priest symbolically loaded down the animal with all of Israel's sins for that year - thus purifying the Jewish people. Eventually, Azazel became a fallen angel in the eyes of Hebrew mystics.

Azbuga(h) - One of the 8 great throne angels of judgment who clothes with the garment of righteousness those deemed worthy among the new arrivals in heaven.

Azer - Angel of the element fire.

Azeruel - Azeruel is one of the twenty-eight angels who govern the mansions of the moon. Azeruel is responsible for Azubene, the sixteenth mansion. Although he encourages the ransoming of prisoners, Azeruel is generally negative as he hinders travel, weddings, harvests and business.

Azrael - The Angel of Death who is "forever writing in a large book and forever erasing what he writes: what he writes is the birth of man, what he erases is the name of the man at death."

The Islamic angel of death with four faces, who is covered with a million veils as he flies on four wings. If you could look under the veils, you would see a body completely covered with innumerable eyes - one eye for each living person. Every time one of Azrael's eyes blinks, a mortal is dying somewhere in the world.

Azrael keeps a roster listing of names of all human beings, but he does not know when individual deaths will happen. When the time for a particular person's death has come, Allah lets a leaf drop from the tree below His Throne - on which is written the name of the person to die. Azrael then reads the name and separates the soul from the person's body after 40 days. Sometimes a mortal resists the separation, thought. To help things along, Azrael will sometimes fly back to Allah to get an enticing apple from Paradise to show the reluctant mortal.

According to one Islamic legend, Azrael go his job as the angel of death by helping Allah create Adam. According to this story, Allah had originally sent off the angels Djibril (Gabriel), Mikal (Michael) and Israfel - not Azrael - to earth on a mission to facilitate the creation. The trio was supposed to gather up different types of clay for Allah to use in making Adam.

However, the earth refused the soil, warning the angelic trio that the new creature would rebel against his Maker and bring misfortune to earth. Therefore, the trio came back to heaven without the variously colored soils. An unhappy Allah then turned to the hard-nosed Azrael to get the soil. Azrael wouldn't take and earthly no for an answer. In the end, Allah rewarded the determined Azrael for his successful mission by putting him in charge of the sometimes tough job of splitting off dying people's spirits from their bodies.

Aziel - Aziel is one of the twenty-eight angels who govern the mansions of the moon. Aziel is in charge of Sadalabra, the twenty-fifth mansion. In this role, Aziel is a negative angel who encourages revenge and enmity, casts spells to prevent copulation, and prevents people from performing tasks they should be doing.

Azrael (Izrail) - "Whom God Helps." Azrael lives in the Third Heaven and has the monumental task of recording everybody's names when they are born and erasing them again when the die. In angel magic, he is considered ruler of the planet Pluto, making him one of the planetary angels. In Jewish and Islamic lore, he is called Izrail and is the angel of death. This is probably because of his interest in reincarnation. Izrail does not know when someone will die. Allah writes the person's name on a leaf, which he drops from his throne. Izrail picks it up and collects the person's soul forty days later. Izrail has four thousand wings and four faces that are covered with a million veils. His body is made up of as many eyes and tongues as there are people living on earth. Every time Izrail blinks, it means someone has died. Izrail is so large that if all the water in the world were poured on his head, none would reach the ground. It would take a person 70,000 days to travel form one of his eyes to the other. Izrail is often depicted with one foot resting on a bridge that connects Heaven and Hell. People have to cross over this bridge to be judged.

Azrael became an angel of death in an interesting way. When God decided to create Adam, he sent Michael, Gabriel, and Israfiel to earth to collect seven handfuls of dirt, which God was going to use to make the first man. The earth refused to accede to this request, as it believed mankind would cause only pond and suffering. Consequently, the three angels failed in their mission. God then sent Azrael down to earth. He forcibly extracted the dirt and returned to Heaven with it. To reward his for this, God decreed that Azrael would be responsible for releasing the human soul from the physical body at the moment of death.

Azrael can be called upon when exploring past lives, or when investigating psychic topics.
